I made a logo and it only took five years.

Western Monarchy is a name I came up with in 2007 when I first had the idea of putting all my personal work behind an alias. It’s stuck with me since then. I might even LLC that sucker.

My Evernote list of personal projects has been growing for years as I never find time to bring them past the planning stages. Last night I made my first browser extension (more on that later) and it needed a home. Thus Western Monarchy was finally born. Here’s hoping that the momentum keeps going.

I’ve always been fascinated by heraldry and I like this trend of quadrant logo design. The crown in the west represents, well, western monarchy. The moon in the north is my recreation of The Moon tarot card. The bear in the east is a bear, enough said. The brackets in the south are Inconsolata and are just nerdy.

The typeface is the great League Gothic. I messed around with a lot of serifs and didones but they didn’t do it for me. I’ve wanted to use a narrow sans-serif for awhile and this was my chance. The year is in Georgia small caps, whose numbers I’ve always loved…even though these are roman.

The page background on westernmonarchy.com is from subtle patterns which I darkened in photoshop.

I surprisingly don’t hate this. In fact, I think I might like it, albeit reluctantly. The video is a little grating and knowing, but if you just listen to the song by itself, it’s kind of interesting and the fact that I have listened to it three times in the past twenty minutes is surely testament to something. Also, “Shorty, you’re a ten,” is a refrain I can get behind.

(Disclaimer: According to iTunes, I have listened to Ke$ha’s “Crazy Beautiful Life” twenty-seven times, so you should probably take my opinions on music with a grain of salt.)

Just re-watched this video for like the 15th time and would love to make this girl my bestie. Everything from the x-men reference to the boba fett mask to budlight lime <3 reference to the angst ”get out of my room” shit is perfect.

I question the casting. DiCaprio is too confident, I always saw Gatsby as just sort of barely holding on. He might pull off the sadness. And the darkness. At least he’s paired up with Luhrman again. I don’t think I buy Mulligan as Daisy, she looks too what I’d call ‘girl next door’ and harsher critics might call ‘low born’. Maguire will pull off Carraway but he never had much to do but react.

The opulence looks satisfying but hopefully will not be too jarring or distracting. Luhrman’s sets have a tendency to overact. The eyes of T. J. Eckleburg did give me chills.

There is something odd about seeing a movie in HD and believing it’s the ’20s and not actors playing dress up. Road to Perdition handled this well. I think it’s in the lighting.

I’m fully prepared for this to totally disappoint but some small optimistic part of me wants to love it.
